Palm Sunday and the Purification of the Temple

Palm Sunday marks the last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. On this day, Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem is celebrated, a deeply significant event that preceded his crucifixion. According to the Gospels, the crowd welcomed him with great joy, spreading their cloaks along the way and waving palm branches, while proclaiming: "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Matthew 21:8-9)

The following day, on Holy Monday, Jesus performed one of the most remarkable and courageous acts of his ministry: the Purification of the Temple. On finding the holy place transformed into a common marketplace, with vendors and money changers operating freely, Jesus demonstrated His zeal for the sanctity of God's house: "My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves" (Matthew 21:13).

Jesus Teaches in the Temple and Mary Anoints His Feet

In the days leading up to his crucifixion, Jesus devoted himself to teaching in the temple in Jerusalem, confronting religious hypocrisy and calling the people to repentance. In Matthew 23:23, his rebuke to the religious leaders was blunt: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you grind up mint and dill and cummin, and despise what is most important in the law, judgment and mercy and faith; but you must do these things and not omit them."

During this period, a particularly significant moment occurred when Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus' feet with pure nard, a perfume of great value, wiping them with her hair. John describes the scene: "Then Mary took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the smell of the ointment." John 12:3. Faced with Judas Iscariot's criticism about the supposed waste, Jesus replied: "Leave it; he has kept it for the day of my burial" (John 12:7).

The Last Supper

On Holy Thursday, Jesus celebrates the Jewish Passover with his disciples, transforming it into an eternal moment by instituting the Holy Supper. By taking the bread and the cup, he establishes a new meaning: "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me" and "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you" (Luke 22:19-20). This act symbolizes the sacrifice he would make on the cross, turning a Jewish tradition into a sacred memorial for all Christians.

During this same supper, Jesus washes the disciples' feet, a task normally reserved for servants. As recorded in John's Gospel, this gesture transcends symbolism, becoming a practical example of love and service. His words reinforce this teaching: "If I then, being your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet" (John 13:14), inviting his followers to adopt a life of service to others.

Garden of Gethsemane and the Betrayal of Judas

On the night of the betrayal, Jesus and his disciples went to Gethsemane, a garden near the Mount of Olives, where he would experience one of the most intense moments of his ministry. In Matthew 26:36-38, we read:

"Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I go over there and pray.' Taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, 'My soul is deeply grieved, in mortal sorrow; stay here and watch with me.

Jesus went away to pray alone, prostrating himself with his face to the ground: "My Father, if it is possible, remove this cup of suffering from me! But let it not be as I will, but as you will." (Matthew 26:39).

It was at this moment that Judas Iscariot arrived with an armed mob sent by the chief priests. "The traitor had arranged a sign with them, saying, 'He whom I kiss is he; arrest him. Immediately turning to Jesus, Judas said, 'Hail, Master!' and kissed him." (Matthew 26:48-49)

The Crucifixion and Resurrection

Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection mark the culmination of the Christian message. Unjustly condemned, Jesus was crucified between two malefactors on Calvary. In an act of compassion, he responded to the heartfelt request of one of them: "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:42-43).

Three days later, women found the tomb empty and angels announced: "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen" (Luke 24:5-6). This resurrection confirms his divinity and offers eternal life to those who believe.

Jesus then appeared to the disciples, bringing peace and a new mission. He said to them, "Peace be with you!" and "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" (John 20:20-23). These encounters confirm His love and authority, calling us to continue His work of reconciliation.
